Step-By-Step Guide
Gearing Up At 50 Step-By-Step Guide

Step 1: Finish Your Job Quests

The first thing you should do once you hit 50 is complete your Job Quests. Not only does this unlock important abilities, it will reward you with a full set of Artifact Armor (Four level 45 pieces and a 50 body).

Step 2: To The Market Board!

While you can skip this step, there are a few benefits to buying a set of crafted accessories off the Market Board. First, your accessories and belt are likely iLvl 40 or lower, making the crafted pieces a nice upgrade. More importantly, however, the crafted pieces can be broken into Materia once you have spiritbonded them. This allows you to get a head start on acquiring the two Materia needed for the 2nd step of the Relic Weapon quest line, A Relic Reborn.

Step 3: Updating Your Weapon

Now that your armor and accessories have been updated, you'll need a weapon to match. You'll have three options here.

The Grand Company Weapon: Purchased from your Grand Company quartermaster. You will need the max rank, unlocked by completing the quest "Gilding the Bilious", which requires you to complete the dungeon The Aurum Vale. This is the easiest option.
The Wanderer's Palace Weapon: Dropped by the final boss of The Wanderer's Palace. For Paladin's, this boss drops the only ilvl 55 shield.
The Base Relic Weapon: This is crafted using materials dropped from treasure coffers in The Wanderer's Palace. While the NQ is weaker than the other two weapons, the HQ is the same damage.

You will eventually need the crafted base weapon to progress your Relic Weapon, so it doesn't hurt to spend a little extra money crafting or buying it now. Crafting details for these weapons can be found in the Relic Weapon Guide.

Step 4: Ifrit (Hard)

With your gear updated, you're ready to go after Ifrit's Weapon, which drops from the Ifrit (Hard) encounter. As long as you have a caster LB, this fight is not a gear check. For details on the encounter, check out my Ifrit (Hard) Guide. If you are queuing into groups that lack the caster LB or are getting unlucky with the weapon drop, you may consider skipping this step for now and coming back with a little more Darklight gear.

For a full list of Primal Weapons, check out the section "Primal Weapons" below.

Step 5: Allagan Tomestones of Philosophy & Mythology

And so the Darklight grind begins. While the HQ 2-Star Crafted Gear is slightly better than Darklight Gear due to having Materia slots, it also requires items bought with Allagan Tomestones of Philosophy, as well as other expensive materials. For now, Darklight Gear is good enough to progress.

At your current gear level, your best option for farming is The Wanderer's Palace. This will reward you with 100 Tomestones of Philosophy and 30 Tomestones of Mythology per run. While Castrum Meridianum and The Praetorium are options, they do not award Tomestones of Mythology. I have included a chart of tomestone drop locations in a section below if you would like to see other farming options.

The Tomestones of Philosophy are used to purchase the iLvl 70 Darklight Armor. To save you a trip to the vendor (Auriana @ Revenant's Toll - Mor Dhona), I've listed all the gear sold in sections below.

If possible, you should try to reach the Tomestone of Mythology cap (450) each week. This resets every Monday at 8:00AM PST. The Tomestones of Mythology are used to purchase iLvl 90 armor, as well as for upgrading the Relic Weapon to +1. I personally recommend saving up for three weeks to upgrade the Relic Weapon first, but that decision is up to you.

Step 6: Amdapor Keep

Once you have 1-3 pieces of Darklight, you can start running Amdapor Keep. While you can run Amdapor Keep without any Darklight Gear, every bit helps when you're using the Duty Finder. The main gear requirement is a DPS check on the Demon Wall. Ifrit's weapon is great for this, but certainly not required.

Amdapor Keep rewards you with 100 Tomestones of Philosophy and 40 Tomestones of Mythology, making it slightly better than The Wanderer's Palace. It also drops iLvl 60 gear to help fill in slots that you haven't filled with Darklight.

This is a great time to start working on your Relic Weapon. If you are still using the Base Crafted Weapon as your primary weapon, hold off on turning the quest in until you get a Primal Weapon.

Step 7: Garuda (Hard)

If your DPS is strong enough to complete Amdapor Keep, you should be ready for Garuda (Hard). If you are struggling with killing the adds fast enough on Garuda, you may either need to farm Ifrit's Weapon or more Darklight gear. The main tank will also be getting hit fairly hard during the add phase and may need more Darklight gear than other classes.

Step 8: Titan (Hard)

Before attempting Titan (Hard), you should have Ifrit's/Garuda's Weapon, as well as either Amdapor Keep Gear or Darklight Gear in every slot. Make sure you have at least 3200+ health and use food to further boost it. This is the hardest encounter you will have faced so far, testing the healers (Healing through Tumult/Mountain Buster), Tanks (Surviving Mountain Buster) and Damage Dealers (DPS check on the heart phase). If you are struggling on one of these areas and not the avoidable mechanics, consider upgrading more Amdapor Keep gear to Darklight gear.

You should also make sure you complete A Relic Reborn up to the Titan (Hard) section so that you unlock your Relic Weapon after your first Titan kill.

With a Relic in hand, finish up farming Darklight gear and you're ready to enter the Binding Coil!

Item Level Guide
Gear Tiers - ilvl Breakdown

Gear in Final Fantasy 14 uses Item Level (iLvl) to determine how many stats to give an item. While leveling, the iLvl is usually close to the actual level of the item. At max level, however, the iLvl of gear will continue to rise, while the level cap will not. This allows gear to progressively improve, even once you've stopped leveling.

To find the item level of an item, look at the thin black bar above the Job requirements and below the defense/magic defense. While two items of the same iLvl are usually very similar, there are situations where a piece of gear may be an upgrade even if the iLvl doesn't change. A notable case is how the Wanderer's Palace/Grand Company weapons have 4 higher base damage than the NQ crafted weapon for A Relic Reborn.
