In order to enter your first dungeon, you will need to complete the main scenario quests until you are on the quest "It's Probably Pirates." Once you have received the quest, follow the steps until it instructs you to "Use the duty finder to enter Sastasha." You are now eligible to queue the dungeon using the duty finder or form your own group and enter.
As FFXIV's first dungeon, Sastasha's primary purpose is to introduce you to a number of mechanics that will show up in one form or another throughout the games dungeons. The first of these mechanics are treasure coffers. These appear in every dungeon in the game and are usually in easy-to-miss areas. Designed to keep you exploring, these coffers will reward the party a chance to get a piece of equipment, as well as other miscellaneous items.
The other important mechanic learned in this dungeon is the use of keys to gain access to blocked off areas. Not all keys are created equal, however. Some only will work a specific door.
When you first arrive, Chopper is nowhere to be seen. Instead, there is an Inconspicuous Switch and three different color coral around the room. This is where the Bloody Memo from earlier comes into play. Click on the color of coral that corrosponds to the color hint in the memo. If you choose wrong, you will get a long duration poison dot and will have to try again.
Once the correct coral is selected, click on the Inconspicuous Switch to spawn Chopper. Chopper is a coeurl and really only has one ability to worry about: Charged Whisker. It will trigger a large circular indicator around the boss, giving you time to move away from him. If you fail to move, you will be inflicted with Paralysis (Randomly prevents your attacks from going off), which the healer likely cannot remove yet.
There isn't much to this first encounter with Captain Madison. Just have the DPS focus down each of the Shallowtail Reavers and then Captain Madison himself. At 50% he will bail, leaving your group with a chest for your efforts.
Captain Madison has mended his wounds and found two more Shallowtail Reavers to fight for him. The fight is largely the same, with one important change. Once he reaches 50%, rather than run he will call for the help of four Scurvy Dogs, which come out of the gate to the left side of the room. I recommend having the tank stand near it, as well as the healer. The dogs will likely run directly to the healer, which will make it easy for the tank to pick them up.
Like before, around 15% Captain Madison sprints off and leaving yet another chest.
The tank should position the boss near the center of the room, between the four Unnatural Ripples. Each player, minus the tank, can watch one of the ripples when you see the message "Bubbles begin forming on the water's surface." If you see water spouting out of the grate, run over and click on it to calm the water. If you aren't fast enough, a Baleen Guard with spawn from the grate and will need to be tanked.
The first time the bubbles form, two of the grates will be active. The second time, three will be active, and finally on the third time, all four will be active. After that, clean up any Guards that may have spawned and finish off Denn.
Congratulations on your first dungeon complete!
