To battle Titan (Hard), defeat Garuda (Hard) and complete the quest "In a Titan Spot" from Y'shtola in The Waking Sands.

While Titan is the most difficult primal you will encounter, he is made much easier by memorizing his attack rotations. In each phase, Titan will have an attack sequence that will never change unless pushed into the next phase, making this encounter much easier if memorized. Titan may seem daunting with five phases, but the first three are just slowly introducing more mechanics to better prepare you for Phase 4 and 5.

You can choose to run this encounter with 1 tank and either 2 or 3 healers. As long as the party is capable of avoiding Weight of the Land, two healers should be enough to complete this encounter. If you are struggling with avoidable damage or with tank death in the final phase, you can opt for the 3rd healer. This will, however, make the DPS check in Phase 4 a bit more challenging.

If you are running with 3 healers, or just feel that you will need a limit break on the heart phase, you can choose to let only the tank attack in phase 1 to build the limit break bar. Once it reaches above half a bar, you should be free to continue the fight normally. This will ensure you have a level 2 limit break by the time the heart phase starts.

Defeating Titan will reward 20 Allagan Tomestones of Philosophy and 15 Allagan Tomestomes of Mythology.

Phase 1

  • Rotation: Landslide > Tumult > (Repeat)
  • Pre-Heal after Landslide.

Phase 2

  • Rotation: Weight of the Land > Landslide > Tumult > (Repeat)
  • Pre-Heal after Landslide and start moving near the end of Tumult to avoid Weight.

Phase 3

  • Rotation: Landslide > Weight of the Land > Bomb Boulders > Landslide > Weight of the Land > Rock Throw > Tumult > (Repeat)
  • Pre-Heal after a player gets encased in stone from Rock Throw.
  • Start moving after Landslide to avoid Weight of the Land.
  • Bomb Pattern #1: Around the edge and one in the middle. Stack in the middle and move to a clear edge as soon as they start to blow up.
  • Bomb Pattern #2: Placed in the middle and in each corner. Move to a clear edge.

Phase 4

  • Rotation: Rock Throw > Landslide > Weight of the Land > Tumult > Rock Throw > Landslide > Weight of the Land > Earthen Fury
  • Pre-Heal after Weight of the Land.
  • Start moving after Landslide to avoid Weight of the Land.
  • Kill the first Granite Gaol and ignore the second until after Titan's Heart is killed.
  • Once the heart dies, stack on the 2nd Granite Gaol so DPS can kill it while Healers Pre-Heal for Earthen Fury.

Phase 5

  • Rotation: Mountain Buster > Tumult > Weight of the Land > Bomb Boulders & Landslide > Mountain Buster > Weight of the Land > Rock Throw > Landslide > (Repeat)
  • Pre-Heal after every other Mountain Buster.
  • Start moving after Tumult/Mountain Buster to avoid Weight of the Land.
  • Top the tanks health off and use damage reduction cooldowns, including Virus and Eye for an Eye, after each Landslide to reduce Mountain Buster damage.
  • Bomb Pattern #3: A column of three bombs will be placed across the middle from East to West, followed by two more columns dropping in. Move either North or South based on where the last set drops and then move to the middle as soon as the middle set blows up.
  • Always be prepared to dodge Landslide during the bombs.

Boss Abilities:

Phase 1 - Titan's Abilities:

  • Rock Buster - A melee strike on the current target for ~1000 damage.
  • Landslide - A frontal column which deals ~1500 damage and triggers a knockback.
  • Tumult - Titan stomps the ground, dealing ~700 damage to all targets. Used up to two times in a row.
  • Geocrush - Titan leaps into the air and places a red ground indicator around the perimeter of the room. After a few seconds, Titan slams down into the center of the room, dealing damage based on how close you are to the center, as well as breaking off the outer edge of the room. Edge: ~1600 damage / Center: ~2600 damage.

Rotation: Landslide > Tumult > (Repeat)

This first phase introduces both Landslide and Tumult. While you still have a wall preventing you from falling in this phase, you should still avoid Landslide every time. In the rest of the phases, getting knocked off the cliff by this ability is most likely a wipe. Healers should also practice pre-casting Succor/Medica II before Tumult is used to prepare for later when it will be manditory. These heals should be used while Titan is using Landslide so the effects are already in place when Tumult is used.

Healers, White Mages especially, should be careful with aggro in this phase. Medica II is quite a bit of threat, which you will be using frequently. It is best to make sure Stoneskins are up on the pull to allow you to skip AoE healing the first 1-2 Tumults. Also, be ready to use Shroud of Saints to significantly reduce your threat.

Once Titan reaches ~90% health, he will leap into the air and begin using Geocrush. Everyone should quickly stack near the tank to receive Sacred Soil and Pre-Casted AoE heals. If you are too far away, just run to an edge instead. Do not be in the middle when this goes off, as you can easily be killed.

This will break the wall off the area, allowing Landslide to knock players off the platform. This also triggers the start of Phase 2.

  • Geocrush - Titan leaps into the air and places a red ground indicator around the perimeter of the room. After a few seconds, Titan slams down into the center of the room, dealing damage based on how close you are to the center, as well as breaking off the outer edge of the room. Edge: ~1600 damage / Center: ~2600 damage.
  • Weight of the Land - Places a sand trap under four random players which explode after a few seconds, dealing ~1800 damage.

Rotation: Weight of the Land > Landslide > Tumult > (Repeat)

This phase will introduce another ability you should remember from story mode Titan, Weight of the Land. It will be cast shortly after Geocrush is used, so be ready to avoid it. This can be tricky to dodge if you aren't already moving, so it is recommended to start moving during Tumult. This will be the main source of avoidable party damage. If the entire group is reliable about dodging Weight of the Land, this encounter will be significantly easier.

At 75% health, Titan will again leap into the air and cast Geocrush. As with before, get near the tank, if possible, and pre-heal. This indicates the start of Phase 3.

  • Rock Throw - Titan places a symbol under a random player and encases them inside a Granite Gaol a few seconds later. This will leave Determination Down (Lowers Damage/Healing Done) on the player after they are freed.

Phase 3 - Bomb Boulder's Abilities:

  • Bury - A bomb plants itself on the ground and starts a countdown to its explosion.
  • Burst - The bomb explodes, dealing ~1800 damage to nearby targets.

Rotation: Landslide > Weight of the Land > Bomb Boulders > Landslide > Weight of the Land > Rock Throw > Tumult > (Repeat)

Titan will gain two more abilities, Rock Throw and Bomb Boulders. He will also start casting Tumult three times in a row, making it more important to pre-heal in this phase.

Bomb Boulders will cause Bombs to fall onto the ground in one of two formations. The first will fill the edges of the room with bombs, with the final bomb being placed in the middle of the room. These will explode in the order they were placed, so everyone should stack in the middle and then move to the edge once the first has exploded and created a safe zone. If you do not move fast enough, the center bomb will explode, potentially killing you. If you watch the mini-map for the red dots when the bombs come down, you will see which one lands first and, as a result, which one will blow up first.

The other pattern will fill the center of the area and the corners with bombs. Just move directly North, South, East, or West to avoid this set of bombs.

Titan's other ability, Rock Throw, will place a small symbol below a random players feet. A few seconds later, that player will become encased in a Granite Gaol, which will need to be killed to free the player. Once freed, the player will have a Determination Down debuff which will need to be cleansed by one of the healers.

As with the previous phases, Titan will again end this phase with Geocrush. Stack up and pre-heal as before.

  • Weight of the Land - Places a sand trap under four random players which explode after a few seconds, dealing ~1800 damage.
  • Rock Throw - Titan places a symbol on a random player and locks them inside a Granite Goal a few seconds later. This will leave Determination Down (Lowers Damage/Healing Done) on the player after they are freed.
  • Earthen Fury - Titan unleashes his fury, dealing damage to the entire party based on if Titan's Heart was killed or not.

Rotation: Rock Throw > Landslide > Weight of the Land > Tumult > Rock Throw > Landslide > Weight of the Land > Earthen Fury

This Phase is a DPS race. Unlike the previous phases, this phase has a strict end to the rotation. If Titan reaches Earthen Fury before his heart is killed, you will not survive. During this phase, Titan will temporarily lose the ability to summon bombs.

Titan will use Rock Throw twice during this phase. The first Granite Gaol should be killed, while the second one should be ignored until his heart has been killed. Remember to clease off the Determination Down debuff, as you'll need all the DPS you can get in this phase.

Weight of the Land will always come after Landslide in Phase 4. When he starts casting Landslide, everyone should begin to move to avoid the incoming Weight of the Land. Since the only Tumult in this phase is directly after Weight of the Land, it can be difficult to pre-cast heals. I use Swiftcast > Medica II/Succor here just as Weight of the Land goes off to ensure the group will survive the Tumult. This is especially important if Weight of the Land happens to hit anyone.

If you have opted for three healers, you will likely need a melee limit break to finish off the heart quickly enough.

Once the heart has been killed, everyone should stack up on the player who is still stuck in Granite Gaol. This will give healers a chance to pre-cast AoE healing to prepare for Earthern Fury while the DPS break the player out. This will send Titan into his final phase.

  • Rock Buster - A frontal strike which deals ~1000 damage.
  • Landslide - A frontal column which deals ~1500 damage and triggers a knockback.
  • Tumult - Titan stomps the ground, dealing ~700 damage to all targets. Used up to seven times in a row.
  • Weight of the Land - Places a sand trap under six random players which explode after a few seconds, dealing ~1800 damage.
  • Rock Throw - Titan places a symbol on a random player and locks them inside a Granite Goal a few seconds later. This will leave Determination Down (Lowers Damage/Healing Done) on the player after they are freed.
  • Mountain Buster - A frontal which deals very high damage to the main tank.

Phase 5 - Bomb Boulder's Abilities:

  • Bury - A bomb plants itself on the ground and starts a countdown to its explosion.
  • Burst - The bomb explodes, dealing ~1800 damage to nearby targets.

Rotation: Mountain Buster > Tumult > Weight of the Land > Bomb Boulders & Landslide > Mountain Buster > Weight of the Land > Rock Throw > Landslide > (Repeat)

In addition to changing up the ability rotation, Phase 5 will introduce three other changes. First, Titan will begin using Mountain Buster. This is an extremely damaging frontal. The tank should try to have a damage reduction cooldown up each time it is used, in addition to the WHM/SCH/SMN/BLM's using either Virus or Eye for an Eye just after each Landslide. While Titan will always follow up Landslide with Mountain Buster, the second Landslide can be easy to miss, as it's used during the Bomb Boulders. It may helpful to remember to just use cooldowns after Landslide or Bombs in this phase.

The second addition is a new bomb pattern. This pattern will drop a column of three bombs down the middle of the platform from East to West. Another column will fall in either the North or the South, with a final column being placed on the opposite side. You will need to move on top of the last set of bombs to be dropped and, as soon as the middle blows up, move into the middle to avoid taking damage. As with the previous bombs, the easiest way to spot which side falls last it to watch the red dots on the mini-map. You should also be aware that Titan will always use Landslide during the bombs in this phase, so be ready to dodge it without moving into an exploding bomb.

Finally, Tumult will get progressively more deadly as Titan's health drops. Near the end, Tumult will be used up to seven times in a row, which is impossible to heal through unless you have pre-healed. I've found it's best to cast Medica II/Succor just after Landslide, as a few seconds later you may be a bit busy dealing with Mountain Buster and won't get the AoE healing up fast enough to survive. As a White Mage, I could pre-cast Medica II just before Mountain Buster would hit, use a Cure II on the tank, and immediately go into spamming Medica I until Tumult ends. This would often allow everyone to be nearly full health when Weight of the Land goes off. The Rock Throw followed by Landslide is a good indicator to remind you to pre-heal soon.
